Let’s just start this blog post off with this. At the current moment I am writing this it is April and it’s STILL snowing in Edmonton. Like a lot. I’m talking it snowed a foot yesterday. WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON. But that being said spring trends wait for no one. While I can’t exactly start sporting skirts and ankle boots I can bring spring into my life with some pretty awesome infused water tricks.
I know you’re thinking “Karly are you serious right now? Water?” And let me tell you home girl. Water is so freaking important. If you see me on the regular like my best friend Cassie does, you’d know I can’t go anywhere without my 2.2L water bottle. And I’m seriously talking anywhere. Going to the bar? Water. Wing night? Water. Literally anywhere else? You can bet I’ve got water.
That is because…
WATER IS IMPORTANT, GIRLFRIEND
Let’s get real, you’ve probably heard countless times that water is really good for you. And to face the fact. It totally is. Especially if you lead an active lifestyle! I hit the gym five days a week for about an hour and a half. And I go hard. In fact, at the present moment I’m writing this it was leg day. And it was hard. Hard enough that a random person in my gym stopped me half way through my workout and said this: “You know you’re making everyone incredibly jealous hey?” I was confused. They replied “It’s 6am and you’re already working so hard! It’s motivating everyone else!” AYYEEEE W’S FOR YO GURL!
But seriously. I was dying. My shirt was soaked, I had sweat dripping off my body, and let me tell you I smelled terrible. Now to tie this all back to water, what I’m trying to say is. Sweating a lot = loss of fluids. Loss of fluids = dehydration. Dehydration is a no no. So let’s rehydrate with some good ol’ H2O. But let’s infuse it. Because infused water is like 100x better than regular water, right?
Some Bangin’ Infused Water Recipes
So water can be pretty boring. I will be the first one to admit that. But since we’re (almost) headed into Spring I thought I’d bring to you three awesome infused water recipes to get you motivated to drank that water girl! It’s important to know that everyone’s water intake is different. By now most of you probably know Khloe Kardashian drinks 6L of water a day. That apparently was Ok’d by her doctor but I wouldn’t recommend. At this present moment, I try to drink about 4.5L a day. That is accounting for water mixed with my protein shakes, pre workout, and other things like cooking. I don’t exactly chug 4.5L worth of protein shakes a day so, here’s how I dress my water up to make it extra fancy for Spring. Here we go!
1. Strawberries, Lemon, L-Carnitine
Hold up. What? You lost me at L-Carnitine. Well, let me fill ya in. L-Carnitine is a supplement sold by pretty much any nutrition brand. It is branded as a fat loss supplement that helps to transfer long-chain fatty acids where they may be oxidized to produce energy. There are a lot of studies out there saying it does work, and many more that say it doesn’t. Honestly, I only drink it on days where I’m seriously working out and I also only dilute one scoop in 1L of water.
I chop up about half a cup of strawberries, add about 1 tablespoon of lemon water, and throw in a scoop of L-Carnirine. Shake it up and it’s delicious. It’s sweet but not fake sugar testing. Also the lemon adds a bit of sour to balance it out.
2. Raspberry Basil
I’m going to be real with you. Sometimes earthy water just tastes great. When I say earthy, I don’t mean dirt flavoured. I mean more… naturally flavoured? Do you feel me? No? Well ok. Don’t worry girlfriend, the raspberries are there to help you out. The basil makes it so fresh and almost like a drink you’d find at the spa. And what says Spring more than a rejuvenating spa day?
Throw in a handful of raspberries and one large, fresh basil leaf. And you’re good to go. This one isn’t as sweet as the Strawberries and L-Carinitne but it’s still super nice. Think of it as a non-alcoholic mojito. That’s really what is going to get you through drinking that water, okay?
3. Pineapple Mint
There will never be a day in my life where I will stop liking pineapples. They’re the sort of food I’ll eat until it feels like my mouth is bleeding. And as my wonderful friend Jen would say (at any opportunity given) “Did you know when you eat pineapples they have this enzyme that breaks down proteins? So when you eat pineapples, they’re eating you right back!” For context, she’s also the gal that will say “to quantum physics” before we all take shots at the bar. Amen to her, she’s a real gem.
For this recipe I like to buy the already cored and sliced pineapple to make it way easier. I’m sure it’s more cost effective to buy one whole pineapple but I end up wasting the rest, so it’s better for me to just buy the slices. I take one full slice out of the container, chop it into pieces that will fit into my water bottle, rip up two or three fresh mint leaves, and I’m good to go.
This one has to be my favourite spring water recipe because it’s so tropical and refreshing!
